The Brooklyn Navy Yard has an average violent crime rate and a below average property crime rate for New York City.
As the name suggests, this Brooklyn neighborhood was once a Navy base; it closed in 1966 and the area declined, but in recent years it's seen new development and new energy. There is still an industrial section employing thousands of people. There are a few townhouses here but in coming years new condos, grocery stores, and green spaces will make this more residential.
The Navy Yard is bordered on the north by the East River, on the east by Williamsburg, on the south by Clinton Hill and Fort Greene, and on the west by Vinegar Hill.
