Brompton has an above average violent crime rate and a high property crime rate for London.
Charles Dickens once wrote about Brompton, saying: it "was at one time almost exclusively the artist quarter and is still largely frequented by the votaries of the brush and chisel, though of late years Belgravia has been encroaching upon its boundaries, and Belgravian rents are stealing westward.”
Today Brompton is still home to many artistic types and students chasing after their passions while on a budget. Rent tends to be low here and a lot of the apartments are smaller, one bedroom, and in run down buildings.
The area is completely surrounded by high income, trendy areas, so it tends to be forgotten amidst the bustle and buzz. The Brompton Design District was created in 2007 to revitalize interest in the area and promote the neighborhood's museums, restaurants, and shops.
Brompton is bordered on the north by Knightsbridge, on the east by Belgravia, on the south by Chelsea, and on the west by South Kensington.
