Situated at one of the highest points in London, Highgate has long been a destination for those who are creative, artistic, or famous, and this is a sought after neighborhood for families as well. Highgate has a real community vibe, with reading clubs, festivals, playdates, and other local events on an almost weekly basis. Many of these activities are completely free. A lot of people spend time outdoors here, talking, walking, eating, and just enjoying life.
Housing-wise, there are options for many different price ranges here. For those who are on a budget, flats and lofts aren’t too over the top. For single-family homes, prices vary from affordable to outrageous.
If green space is something that you covet, this area is perfect for you because it offers easy access to Waterlow Park and the sprawling Hampstead Heath park. Another famous site is Highgate Cemetery, where some of England's most famous writers and philosophers are buried, and a popular spot for walkers. Highgate also has tennis courts, an outdoor heated swimming pool, and communal gardens.
Arts venues, concert halls, and theatres are aplenty, including The Red Hedgehog, an intimate 100 seat concert hall and Upstairs at the Gatehouse, an experimental theater.
You’ll find tons of shops here, a library, spa, gym, sports clubs, Tesco, and plenty of residential parking. Highgate has a good selection of cafes and restaurants as well. High Tea of Highgate is one of the most famous; it's a tiny cafe that is overflowing with cakes, scones, and other baked goods.
Highgate is bordered on the north by East Finchley and Muswell Hill, on the east by Crouch Hill, on the south by Gospel Oak, and on the west by Golders Green.
