Porter Ranch has a low violent crime rate and a low property crime rate for Los Angeles.
Located in the San Fernando Valley, Porter Ranch is an affluent community famous for its role in the movie E.T. since it was featured in several of the neighborhood and park shots of this beloved film. In recent years it's become infamous due to a massive natural gas leak that chased thousands of residents away for several months, but the leak was eventually capped and families moved back home
This is a predominantly residential neighborhood of planned developments. Wide, quiet streets feature tidy properties and large houses. There are two main commercial roads that cut through town; they are where you'll find shopping plazas with a number of casual restaurants, grocery stores, and big box retailers. For more suburban shopping, the Northridge Mall is a short drive away.
The Porter Valley Country Club has a golf course that winds its way among the homes, so aficionados can walk off their backyard and onto the links. There are also several parks in the neighborhood and plenty of hiking trails in the nearby mountains.
There are many excellent schools in the area.
Porter Ranch is bordered on the north by the Santa Susana Mountains, on the east by Granada Hills, on the south by Northridge, and on the west by Chatsworth.
