Named after the British engineer Howard Newton, the land in the Newton area was mainly used for nutmeg plantations in the 1800s. Today, Newton is a sleepy little residential enclave of premium hotels and condominium complexes that lacks the hectic hustle and vibrancy of its neighbors Orchard Road or Bukit Timah.
With the convenience of Orchard Road being in close proximity, and conveniently located on both the Downtown and North-South MRT lines, Newton provides an easy commute for professionals working in the city.
A number of pre-schools and kindergartens are located in this area as well, catering to local and expatriate families nearby. Property prices in this area are on the high-end due to its central location, though many couples, families and professionals find it a convenient location to settle in.
Newton is bordered on the north by Novena, on the east by Rohor, on the south by Orchard, and on the west by Tanglin.

A large local hawker centre popular with the tourists, Newton Food Centre was first opened in 1971 and was most recently renovated in 2006. The building’s design draws inspiration from colonial architectural styles, with more than 50 species of flowers incorporated in and around the food centre to re-create the atmosphere of being in a plantation. Open till the wee hours of the morning, this place is also a popular supper haunt for night owls and late night party people, with popular dishes including Sambal Stingray.
