Chippendale has a below average violent crime rate and a below average property crime rate for Sydney.
Once a gritty working-class suburb in Sydney's Inner West region, Chippendale – 'Chippo' to locals – has become a gentrified, trendy part of town (Travel + Leisure magazine called it one of Sydney's hottest neighborhoods). It's seen loads of investment in recent years, including the AUD $2 billion renovation of an old brewery into offices, boutiques, and restaurants and designation by the city council as a creative hub, with support for artists and galleries.
There are a number of trendy dining and drinking venues, but due to the nearby universities and large student population here, there is plenty of affordable fare.
Despite its rebirth, this is still a fairly quiet, peaceful neighborhood. Housing is a mix of terraces, two-story brick row houses, shiny high rises, and older apartment buildings.
Chippendale is bordered on the north by Ultimo, on the east by Redfern, on the south by Redfern and Darlington, and on the west by Camperdown.
