Haymarket has an average violent crime rate and an average property crime rate for Sydney.
Haymarket, located just southwest of the CBD, is known as Sydney's Chinatown. The streets are packed with Chinese restaurants (and Malay, Thai, and other cuisines, too), noodle bars, Asian supermarkets, and souvenir shops. The historic 150 year old Paddy's Markets has over 1,000 stalls with clothing, arts and crafts, electronics, home goods, gifts, and other items. The energy keeps up at night as well, with lots of bars, clubs, and theaters in the area. Each Friday the neighborhood hosts the Chinatown Night Market, which attracts thousands of people to its stalls.
For housing, you'll find a limited number of two-story row homes, but condos dominate the landscape here.
Haymarket is bordered on the north by the Sydney CBD, on the east by Surry Hills, on the south by Redfern and Chippendale, and on the west by Ultimo.
