Located in Sydney's Northern Beaches region, Killarney Heights is an affluent, quiet suburb bordered by forests and water. Located on a peninsula, the land was originally purchased by a real estate developer in 1960 and marketed as a model community. Today, this is an attractive neighborhood with big homes and excellent schools. These two factors make it a popular place for families.
It's great for nature lovers as well. Perched above Middle Harbour, many spots along the local hiking trails offer stunning views of the water and surrounding suburbs. For boating aficionados there's a boat ramp that will put you right in the beautiful harbour. The suburb has other amenities for active people, including athletic fields, basketball courts, and a swimming pool.
You won't find much dining here – there are just a handful of cafes – but hubs like Chatswood aren't far away by car. For groceries and other basics you'll need to head to the adjacent suburb of Forestville. Public transit is limited to the buses that come through here, but there are some speedy private buses that can get you to Sydney's business areas fairly quickly.
Overall, this is a much loved neighborhood that residents consider a well-kept secret. They tout the fact that it's safe, doesn't get much traffic since it's a peninsula, and that it's the kind of place where you get to know your neighbors. People who move here tend to stick around for a long time, so there isn't much turnover in homes.
Fun fact about Killarney Heights' limited history: From the early 1950s until they were found in 1979, an elderly Lithuanian couple lived in a cave here because they believed the Soviets were after them.
Killarney Heights is bordered on the north by Forestville and Frenchs Forest, on the east by Allambie Heights, and on the south and west by Middle Harbour.
