Located in the Sutherland Shire, Menai is a highly rated suburb. It's thoroughly residential, with big homes, gum and palm tree lined properties, and quiet streets. Many of the homes are recently built so you're not going to find charming Federation-style bungalows or Victorian-style terraces, but you will get plenty of space. Thanks to that extra space and the excellent schools, Menai is a big draw for families.
The main avenue through town, Menai Road, is home to a shopping center with a grocery store, health club, drug store, and assorted shops and fast food restaurants. Elsewhere in the neighborhood you'll find Italian, Thai, and Australian restaurants, as well as cafes and a lone sports bar.
While this certainly isn't a hotspot for nightlife, its location does make Menai a nature lover's paradise. There's plenty of bushwalking in the adjacent Georges River National Park and fishing and boating are popular on the river itself. It's also just a 15 minute drive to the entrance of the 72 square kilometer (58 square mile) Royal National Park, which boasts tons of hiking and picture-perfect beaches.
The commute to the CBD involves taking a bus (or driving) to the Sutherland Station, but from there it's a 30 minute ride into the city.
Menai is bordered on the north by the Georges River and Alfords Point, on the east by Illawong and Bangor, on the south by Barden Ridge, and on the west by Holsworthy.
