The suburb of Rozelle owes its name to a flock of birds. Originally, parrots found on Rose Hill in nearby Parramatta earned the moniker Rose-hillers, which morphed to Rosella, and one more spelling change later Rozelle was born. Though it shares a peninsula with the upscale suburbs of Balmain and Birchgrove, the Rozelle is decidedly more laid back. Sure, you'll still find Victorian-style homes that cost a pretty penny, but with the price you get great parks, safety, and walkability.
Rozelle offers a vibrant lifestyle. Darling Street stretches 1 km from the south of the surburb to the north and is packed with restaurants, pubs, shops, and businesses. Other dining options are dotted on quiet streets throughou the area, so you're never far from a bite to eat. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Rozelle Collectors Market sets up on the grounds of the Rozelle Public school. For over 20 years, stalls at this market have offered antiques, clothing, jewelry, and more.
Parks are sprinkled throughout Rozelle, two of which have athletic fields. Residents also have easy access to the 7 km Bay Run path, which hugs Iron Cove through several scenic suburbs.
Housing-wise you'll mostly find two-story Victorian-style terraces and single-story cottages. However, the west side of the suburb is dominated by new mid-rise apartment complexes.
Given the proximity to the CBD and the great amenities, this is a popular spot for professionals and families. But the buzzy social scene attracts plenty of singles and couples as well, giving the suburb a youthful feel.
Residents of all ages and types do have one consistent gripe about Rozelle: the lack of parking.
Rozelle is bordered on the north by Balmain, on the east by White Bay and Jones Bay, on the south by Rozelle Bay, and on the west by Lilyfield.
