Altadena has a low violent crime rate and a low property crime rate for Los Angeles.
Coyotes roam down into this neighborhood from the adjacent Angeles National Forest and occasionally mountain lions and bears make an appearance as well, making Altadena feel worlds away from Los Angeles even though it's separated by only 15 miles (24 kms). This secluded neighborhood is popular with nature lovers and equestrians since it's zoned for horses.
This is a primarily residential community with its own distinct areas: West Altadena is working class while the wealthier residents cluster around East Altadena. There are limited dining and shopping options so expect to go to nearby Pasadena for a night out.
Altadena is bordered on the north by the Angeles National Forest and on the east, south, and west by Pasadena.
Commute:

Century City: 25.5 miles / 60-120 minutes by car / 120 minutes by transit
Downtown LA: 15.9 miles / 40-80 minutes by car / 70-80 minutes by transit

With its location on the edge of a huge national park, Altadena has plenty of hiking. This is a tough trail but the payoff is an amazing view at the end.
An unassuming hole in the wall with great Mexican food and wonderful service. People rave about the molcajete.
A cozy neighborhood bar with a good selection of beers and wine. Hang out on the patio when the weather is nice (which is almost always since it's SoCal).
A community organized street that is filled with lights during the holiday seasons.
