Los Gatos has a below average violent crime rate and a below average property crime rate compared to other cities in the United States.
Los Gatos is a small suburban city in Silicon Valley with a population of about 30,000 directly to the west of San Jose. Culturally, Los Gatos is like most Valley cities: rolling hills, relaxed suburban neighborhoods, and a large population of tech professionals and students sets the tone. The transition from West San Jose to Los Gatos is hard to notice – they feel almost identical, apart from a bit more suburban sprawl in Los Gatos.
Dining and shopping options are abundant. Downtown Los Gatos has a ton of great restaurants and bars, and the close proximity to San Jose means there’s a huge selection to choose from within reasonable distance. Los Gatos also has a lot of name brand stores for clothing and apparel. There are plenty of grocery stores here too, so there’s never a need to leave town to for the basic necessities.
There’s a great mix of housing options here as well. Ranging from subsidized affordable housing and apartments to single family homes, there are enough options to satisfy almost any demographic – if you can afford it. Median home prices are $1.75 million due to Los Gatos’ convenient location, family friendly neighborhoods, and low crime rate. But thanks to high-paying local employers like Netflix and a couple hospitals, many of the residents can afford the price tag.
Los Gatos offers fair public transportation: there’s a VTA lightrail station in the adjacent city of Campbell, as well as community buses that shuttle residents to and from the station. The lightrail conveniently connects to Downtown San Jose, where there’s a BART station that provides train access up and down the Bay Area to San Francisco.
If you’re looking for a great place to settle down with your family, then Los Gatos is a great choice. If you’re single, there may be better value to be found in neighboring Silicon Valley cities such as San Jose where the vibe is similar, but the housing prices are lower and there's more of a nightlife.
Los Gatos is bordered on the north by Campbell, on the east by West San Jose, on the south by the Santa Cruz Mountains, and on the west by Monte Sereno and Saratoga.
