The Melbourne CBD has a high violent crime rate and a high property crime rate for Melbourne.
The beating heart of the Melbourne metropolis is the Central Business District (CBD), home to some of the country's largest corporations, such as Telstra and ANZ Bank. During weekdays this small area of just six square kilometers (2.394 sq mi) vacuums up most of the professionals in the region and then disgorges them at the end of the day. But the city doen't empty out: this is a vibrant place to live and has a bustling night culture to keep its residents entertained.
People who move here find themselves in a multicultural cosmopolitan center, with over 140 nationalities represented. On a typical day, thousands of pedestrians flood the city’s charming historic lanes filled with arcades, shops, restaurants, and speakeasies. On the east side of town is the Theatre District, which still operates theaters that date back to the 1850s.
The historic Southern Cross Station, established in 1859, is the major hub for trains arriving in or leaving the CBD and serves over 17 million passengers each year. But Melbourne is also known for its awesome network of trams and you're never more than a few blocks from one.
Melbourne CBD is bordered on the north by Carlton, on the east by East Melbourne, on the south by the Yarra River, and on the west by Docklands and West Melbourne.
