This month’s Expert Expat Spotlight is with Karen and Allyson from “Life with Karlly”. These two young ladies relocated from the Philippines to the hot and sandy terrain of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. The decision to move abroad was an easy one and choosing Qatar was even easier since they have family there. Having visited their families several times before, the transition was relatively smooth.
The vast majority of residents in Doha are expatriates from Southeast and South Asian countries. Let’s hear from these two expats on what it’s been like for them living in Doha.
What do you enjoy most about being an expat?
We love how there is so much diversity in Qatar. With numerous expats based here in Qatar we enjoy meeting new people from around the world and getting to learn from them as well.
What’s the best part about living where you live?
Compared to our home country of the Philippines, Qatar is relatively safe. Sadly, we really like the fact that we can sleep soundly at night without having to worry about crime.
What’s the hardest part about living where you live?
At times, it can be difficult to deal with the reality that there is inequality in terms of compensation and salary here. Employers tend to base pay on race and seldom on experience and knowledge.
Would you live abroad again? If so, where?
Yes, we would love to live abroad again but to another place. If we decide to go through it, we might go to Canada because of family and healthcare or somewhere in Europe like Amsterdam.
What’s one thing you miss most from your home country?
We really miss the food and the genuine warmth of the Filipinos people.
