Ijburg has a below average violent crime rate and a low property crime rate for Amsterdam.
Amsterdam’s newest neighborhood is a collection of man made islands in the IJmeer lake east of the city. The first people moving there were considered pioneers, and many Amsterdammers still feel IJburg isn't worth a visit. But those who took the plunge first, and those following their example, hardly ever look back.
IJburg is hailed for its space, the water views, and the modern and innovative architecture. When the plans were drawn up, the city made sure to reserve a lot of building plots with limited restrictions other than footprint and height. This enticed creative pioneers to move here and they gave IJburg an urban and trendy image.
The larger projects, a good mix of apartment blocks, urban villas, and a variety of family homes, were commissioned by architects willing to put a creative mark on their designs. The result is an appealing neighborhood with a distinct identity and a good offering of restaurants, shops, and schools.
The tram takes you to Central Station and all stops in between in a matter of minutes, but Amsterdam does feel quite far and makes IJburg a real suburb. In a city where cycling is a primary means of transportation, living here is not for the faint of heart since it can take up to hour to cycle to some parts of Amsterdam. However, plans to create a cyclist bridge from nearby Zeeburgereiland to the Eastern Islands will significantly shorten the existing route.
Housing comes in all shapes and sizes ranging from modest, yet attractive apartments to exclusive villas and everything in between. Because of the abundance of space, IJburg is the perfect place to raise a family, and it is said that those without kids will have a harder time fitting in. But if vast views of water from a penthouse suite with panorama windows are your thing, you should consider checking it out.
IJburg is bordered on all sides by IJmeer.

Blijburg was one of the first pop-up beach clubs in Amsterdam. It sits on a peninsular tip of man made land, that will one day connect the new to make islands north of the main island. Blijburg is no longer a pop up, and is here to stay and is a staple summer destination in Amsterdam. Families, trendy youth, locals, and visitors from out of town all love the relaxed and laid back mood and enjoy many a summer day, and night, here.
Café Vrijburcht sits at a very attractive spot by the water on the smallest island of IJburg. It is part of a communal building where several families and individuals live together, each in their own private homes and studios. They share responsibility for the café restaurant and a small theater showcasing a surprising variety of shows and performances. The restaurant serves pretty good coffee and a simple yet tasty menu. It's a great place for kids since cars aren't permitted on this bit of street. In the summer you can take a jump in the water from one of the communal jetties.
This sailing school offering courses and day camps for kids and adults. You can choose to learn to sail in Optimist dinghies, Lasers, Learlings, and 16m2 family boats. They also offer private lessons and offer programming for kids' birthday parties, too.
When IJburg was still not much more than sand bank, the couple behind this initiative organized a music festival for the first pioneers setting up home here. In the years since, the organization has matured into a creative institution offering a variety of workshops, courses, and events for kids aged 4 to 16. During school holidays, kids can sign up for a four-day workshop where, together with professionals from the music and theater industry, they work on the production and performance of a musical.
