Surry Hills has a below average violent crime rate and a below average property crime rate for Sydney.
Located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, this cool, vibrant area was one of the city's first inner-city suburbs to be gentrified as young people flocked here. Surry Hills is one of Sydney's dining and nightlife hubs: it's got an incredible array of great restaurants, ranging from affordable fare to trendy, upscale spots. Crown Street is the main thoroughfare and epicenter for most of the suburb's shops, dining options, and bars, but there are dining and shopping options on some of its side streets.
Due to its great restaurants and shops, Surry Hills attracts lots of people from other parts of the city. This can make finding a parking spot a daily chore, so try to find housing that includes a parking place.
This is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the city – everything is only a few minutes away. All of these amenities have made this an expensive place to live, however. Renting in one of its apartment complexes or terraced homes will set you back quite a bit.
Surry Hills is bordered on the north by Darlinghurst, on the east by Darlinghurst and Moore Park, on the south by Redfern, and on the west by Ultimo and Haymarket.
