Spuyten Duyvil has a below average violent crime rate and a low property crime rate for New York City.
Just across the Henry Hudson Bridge from Manhattan is the South Bronx neighborhood of Spuyten Duyvil. Pronounced "SPY-ten DYE-vil", the name comes from the original Dutch settlers in this area; there's disagreement on what it means but candidates include "Spouting Devil" and "In spite of the Devil". Despite the dark etymology, this is an upscale, attractive neighborhood with a prime riverfront location.
In the southern half of the neighborhood are collections of giant brick co-op apartment towers. Despite their uninspiring exterior these are upscale places with doormen and better space than you'll get in Manhattan or Brooklyn. The lone exception to this architectural style is the Villa Charlotte Bronte. This beautiful castle-like structure, right on top of the cliffs going down to the Hudson, is the most photographed site in Spuyten Duyvil.
To the north of these apartment complexes you'll find shady streets full of large single-family houses. There are a few extra special homes in this section overlooking the water; overall this area has a very suburban feel to it.
This is a predominantly residential area so forget about walking out your door to an exciting urban landscape. There are a few restaurants and shops – the requisite New York pizza joint, a salon, dry cleaners, a grocer, pharmacy – but you'll have to head into other neighborhoods for more options.
Spuyten Duyvil is relatively diverse and attracts people of all ages.
The neighborhood is split in half by the Henry Hudson Parkway, a toll road that winds its way north through the Bronx. This parkway provides easy access into Manhattan or to roads leading to northern business hubs like White Plains and Stamford. It's got respectable public transit as well: there's a Metro North train station stop here and a subway line comes through the adjacent neighborhoods of Marble Hill and Kingsbridge – it would be a cold walk in winter, but they are walkable.
Spuyten Duyvil is bordered on the north by Riverdale, on the east by Marble Hill, on the south by Spuyten Duyvil Creek, and on the west by the Hudson River.
