Kennington has been one of the best kept secrets in London. It is an affluent neighborhood of stately Georgian homes and communal space, including the historic Cleaver Square, which was created in 1789 as the first residential square south of the Thames. The ample green space here is a big draw for residents.
Many of the single-family homes have been kept intact, making this a popular area for those with kids. However, there are some properties that have been converted into apartments and Kennington also attracts young professionals working in the City or Westminster, which makes the neighborhood a bit more lively. Nearer to the adjacent neighborhood of Elephant and Castle, Kennington also has a lot of council and ex-council homes.
Foodies will be at home here, with lots of restaurants offering different cuisines. Vietnamese, Persian, Eritrean, Portuguese, and French fare are just some of the options. There are a ton of vegetarian and vegan options as well. For a nightcap after your meal or an evening out with friends, Prince of Wales is the most popular pub.
Independent shops and farmers' markets add to the tightknit community feeling here since everyone seems to know their customers.
Cultural experiences are easy to find here as there are several theaters, art galleries, and music venues. There are a few cinema houses that show everything from blockbusters to small art films. Kennington also hosts many summer events to bring its residents together.
Kennington Park is another highlight of the area. There are gardens, cafes, playgrounds, tennis courts, and athletic fields, plus plenty of space for a picnic or just lounging in the sun.
Kennington is bordered on the north by Lambeth, on the east by Camberwell, on the south by Brixton, and on the west by Vauxhall.
